Current help for build 21 on iOS and Android, including both talk controls, Android session actions, music behavior and long-session checks.

Create or join a room

  1. Enter a nickname. It is local room identity, not an account.
  2. Tap Create room, or paste a six-character code and tap Join room.
  3. Allow microphone access when prompted. Android 13+ may separately ask to show the ongoing session notification.
  4. Share the built-in invite or copy the code. A room holds up to five people including the host.
  5. Use Tap to talk for a persistent open mic or hold Hold to talk for push-to-talk. You join muted by default.

Two ways to speak

Tap to talk: tap once to keep the microphone live, then tap again to mute. Hold to talk: hold while speaking and release to mute yourself. Both controls stay visible regardless of the saved default talk mode.

The participant list shows authoritative muted and speaking states. The host can remove a participant. If the host leaves, host status moves automatically to the earliest remaining participant.

Common questions

TalkWay says microphone access is needed or blocked

Tap Grant microphone access on the start screen. If access is blocked, enable Microphone for TalkWay in iOS or Android system settings, then return. TalkWay does not request camera, location or contacts.

The room is offline, reconnecting or will not join

Check the internet connection and the exact six-character code. Use Retry when shown. An unused code expires, so the host may need to create and share a fresh room. TalkWay displays explicit offline, retry, reconnecting and maintenance states.

Music quality dropped on a Bluetooth headset

Classic Bluetooth switches to its lower-quality call profile when that headset's microphone is used. This is a hardware limitation. Check the route card in the room, try the phone or wired microphone, and choose Mix, Duck or Voice only under Audio behavior.

How does background audio work?

TalkWay keeps an active room running while the screen is locked or another app is visible, subject to the operating system and battery settings. Android shows an ongoing foreground-service notification with Talk/Mute and End session actions.

Can I use a headset button on Android?

Yes, on compatible devices. Enable Headset push to talk in Settings. Holding the headset call or media button can then talk in the background; it temporarily takes that button away from the music app for the session. This setting is Android-only.

Why did TalkWay ask whether I am still there?

After a two-hour session, TalkWay displays a “Still there?” confirmation. Confirm within 60 seconds to keep the room active; otherwise it ends the long-running session.

Can I open Settings without leaving?

Yes. Use Settings at the bottom of the room. Back returns to the active room. You can adjust theme, language, talk mode, music behavior and preferred microphone; Android also shows the headset push-to-talk option.
